To improve your technique you have to... go to the water. But for those who don't have the time, who don't go surfing when it's too big, who are far from their home spot, there is always an alternative. There are simple, effective and almost painless methods (no pain no gain) to stay supple and fit.
To improve your technique you have to... go to the water. But for those who don't have the time, who don't go surfing when it's too big, who are far from their home spot, there is always an alternative. There are simple, effective and almost painless methods (no pain no gain) to stay supple and fit.
1- Improve bust mobility
Optimal mobility (through the thoracic spine and shoulders) is essential for an efficient paddle, a good capacity of rotation to perform turns and joints in good health. This goes beyond trying to avoid pain in the shoulders. A simple work on the chest belt and all the mobility of the bust is improved. To work on this, start by watching online videos like Surf Strength Coach that are very well done and that give a good starting point for daily exercises.
2- Hip mobility
The hip joints need training on a wide range of movements to support surfing. The sitting postures that we repeat chronically prevent the complete mobility of our hips, but there are solutions to restore it! Not only will this allow you to have a greater fluidity in your surfing but also to relieve possible pains in the lower back or in the knees.
3- Nutrition
Food is the basis of your sports practice: it influences health and the ability to recover from an effort, or injury. Should we specify that we should eat less but better? To inspire you do not hesitate to visit the Surf Session website where many recipes are available.
4- Capitalize on its "central strength"
You have hip problems? Back pain? You surf? The "central force" is the symbol of good general health. Most of us have sleeping muscles, or love handles on the side. Surfing is based precisely on the rotation of the body, and the application of different forces in this rotation: this is what the central force is all about. Surfing also requires a lot of endurance through the back muscles via the postures adopted during rowing. To improve this central strength, it is therefore necessary to work on breathing, the general stability of the body, and eventually move to a more global training.
5- Breathing
The quality of breathing is obviously the basis of everything. Improving breathing necessarily involves mental work to return to breathing through the diaphragm. Expanding your rib cage in three dimensions is the key to success. For that nothing like a yoga session before going to the water.
