The polar vortex is these high-altitude winds that usually contain cold air at the pole. This year a major stall sent a serious cold snap on the United States.
This is enough to cool the spirits of many surfers, but not necessarily Daniel Schetter and Allen Finau, who are already motivated enough to face really cool temperatures to surf the small waves of the Great Lakes of Michigan.
Photographer Devon Hains followed the two frosty surfers during this organized session when it was about -20°C, with a feel at -35!
Schetter referred to here as "Surfer Dan", explains that he has been doing this for 25 years with adapted equipment, but does not recommend others to try it. There are too many possible accidents when the landscape is so frozen...
