Hundreds of people gathered last Saturday on the beach of Mareta (Sagres, southern Portugal), for a "paddle out" aimed at raising awareness about the protection of the environment and the promotion of renewable energies. This event was organized by the Paddle Out for Nature association, whose objective is to involve the surfing community in the protection and preservation of the oceans and coasts.

This joyful rowing session was able to count on the participation of some well-known local surfing figures, such as Alex Botelho, a frequent loader of the big swells of Nazaré. Adelino Soares, mayor of the neighboring municipality of Vila do Bispo, a partner of the association also took to the water for the occasion. This initiative was part of the Paddle out for Nature 2018 festival, which, in addition to this spectacular action, offered activities throughout the weekend, such as a major beach clean-up or concerts.

Roundtables were also on display. On the agenda is the protection of nature through surfing and the thorny issue of hydrocarbon exploitation in southern Portugal, which threatens the Algarve coast.

A great way to celebrate the end of summer!
