For adults who want some adventure in their vacations, surf camp is a popular choice. It gives them time in the sand and surf, breaks up the monotony of everyday life, and enables them to get in some vigorous exercise. For some of these adult adventurers, however, the idea of attending a surf camp is off-putting because they think they'll spend the day with a bunch of kids. While this certainly can be the case with general surf camps, many companies are now offering adults-only camps. The following article takes a look at some of the most popular surf camps for adults available in California.

Adult Surf Camp Packages from Endless Summer Surf Camp

This company has two locations: San Onofre, California, and the Mal Pais area of Costa Rica. Its adults-only (age 18 and over) packages include five days of instruction. These packages include all the equipment as well as snacks, lunch, and drinks. The overnight package also includes accommodations. The majority of the attendees are surfing for the first time. Advanced booking is recommended, as the sessions fill up fast.

Aqua Surf School

This company has locations in Santa Monica, Hawaii, and Florida, with its adult surf school based out of the California location. It offers a one-time class price as well as packages ranging from three to nine classes. The students must be over 18 to participate, but no skill level is required. The classes are held every Sunday and the cost includes wet suit and surfboard use.

Richard Schmidt Surf School

This surf school is based out of Santa Cruz, California. Renowned surfer Richard Schmidt and his wife Marissa host the camp. National Geographic named it the fourth-best surf school in the world. Adult camps run for five days. There are only two sessions, one week in June and the other in August, so book far in advance.

Club Ed

This company holds an adults-only camp in June. Located in Monterey, California, this school promotes having fun in a safe, beautiful environment. In addition to surfing, the camp provides access to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the Santa Cruz Surf Museum, and the Arrow Surfboard factory, among other local attractions. The cost of the camp includes all surf equipment, food, and lodging.

Surf Happens Adult Summer Surf Camp

Located just outside Santa Barbara, this camp runs year-round, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost only includes the surf lessons and equipment, so attendees will need to make their own lodging and dining plans. The surfing takes place off the Santa Claus Lane beach. The instructors emphasize safety, paddling basics, and different surfing techniques.
There is no shortage of vacation choices these days. Most however, include the prospect of bunches of children running around. Surf camps for adults are a great way to avoid this aspect of vacation life. In California, several options are available. And while each is distinct in its own way, they all have one thing in common: they offer a relaxing way to meet other adults and learn some valuable surf tips.
