Optus has partnered with Shark Mitigation Systems, to test the world's first shark detection buoy. Initial testing took place at the Sydney Aquarium and then moved to wild testing in the Abrolhos Islands and Port Stephens. It's an R&D project which aims to detect sharks and send real-time alerts to lifeguards.

Introducing Clever Buoy™, a Research & Development project between Optus, Google and Shark Attack Mitigation Systems - SAMS to develop a smart ocean buoy that detects sharks and alerts lifeguards on the beach.

As Australia has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, this got us thinking... how could we make our beaches even better?

Meet Clever Buoy™, a smart ocean buoy that detects sharks
and alerts lifeguards on the beach. The buoy detects the sharks by measuring their unique sonar return. And via the strength of the Optus Network sends real-time information to Lifeguards.

We believe the development of Clever Buoys could one day present a viable alternative to current shark defence methods in Australia and worldwide.
