Nowadays, you don't need oceans to surf. Welcome to the Bend Whitewater Park, an artificial river wave arena for all water sports enthusiasts located in Bend, Oregon.
The innovative park features four waves of various degrees of difficulty. There's Jason's Wave (beginner wave), Kricket's Wave (ideal for kayakers), Wave #3 (experienced paddlers), and Eddy's Wave (pro paddlers).
When the cold season ends and the mountain ice melts, the river flow increases, and the water sports season start for hundreds of local riders. The good news is that surfers now have a new spot to explore.
The local authorities decided to update and improve the initial version of the surf spot with the help of artificial wave experts from Surf Anywhere, led by Neil Egsgard. The construction works are finished, and water is already flowing.
The result is amazing. The newest river surfing wave has already been tested, and it is now possible to carve and perform cutbacks on the wave's face. Surfers should jump straight onto the board from the concrete blocks. With time, and more water moving, the spot will get even better.
"I provided the wave concept design, and the rest of the team built it. I am really pleased with the project because it shows the dramatic impact of good wave design and because it is making so many people happy," expressed Neil Egsgard.
Bend Whitewater Park's latest attraction will certainly boost the local surfing scene. Just remember to follow the park's recommendation: avoid using leashes, wear a helmet, and stick to low profile, flexible surf fins.
