When I was a little kid, I wished two things: that I could breathe underwater and that I could see underwater. The Moken sea gypsy children in Thailand have apparently figured out to achieve one of those two things. The Moken rely on the ocean for survival, and so naturally they spend hours on end in the sea. Likely as a result of time in the water, Moken children learn at a young age to override the body’s automatic eye reflex when it comes to seeing underwater. By learning to master this reflex, the children are able to see twice as clearly than the average human underwater. Watch the quick documentary by the BBC below to learn more about the Moken’s amazing underwater abilities.
