13-year-old surfer Elio Canestri was attacked by a shark while surfing with 7 others off the west coast side of Reunion Island on Sunday morning. It was reported that a boat was launched very quickly to take Elio out of the ocean, however, the severe wounds to the young athlete’s stomach, legs, and arms eventually lead to his death.
Professional World Surf League competitor Jeremy Flores grew up on Reunion Island, and was devastated to hear the news.
“ANOTHER shark attack in Reunion island this morning. 13 years old Elio was one of our best up and coming surfers. Words can’t describe how sad and angry I am. So young!!! Heart breaking news . RIP.”- Flores posted on his Facebook page.
