In a parenting move that puts your child safety seat upgrade to shame, designer and engineer Bran Ferran turned his ongoing Mercedes-Benz Unimog renovation project into something a little more “kid friendly” when his daughter, Kira, was born. The goal? To build a “superior large-scale expedition system for over-land exploration, still photography, scientific research, and with which to show my daughter seldom visited places of unspoiled natural beauty.”
Which, as it turns out, means building the most badass adventure mobile we’ve ever seen. The KiraVan Tractor is a modified Mercedes Unimog U500NA with a six-cylindar turbo-diesel engine and a four-door cabin. This links up to tow the KiraVan Trailer, a mobile base camp set-up for relaxing when the Ferrans aren’t, you know, gliding effortlessly over some of the gnarliest terrain on the planet.
All in the all, the set up makes for a mobile home that’s 31 feet long and 10 feet high, complete with interior cameras, and air drone for checking up on impending traffic conditions, Kevlar tires, and the ability to tackle 45-degree slopes. Oh, and a matching motorcycle.
