A surfer was bitten in the legs by a shark at sea in California, but was able to kick it and survive.
Nick Wapner, 19, was rammed Tuesday morning while surfing with friends on Montana de Oro beach, reported The Tribune of San Luis Obispo. The area is about 200 miles (320 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles.
Ranger supervisor Robert Colligan said Wapner reported being attacked by a white shark about five meters (15 feet) long. The voracious animal bit his right ankle and then his right thigh.
Wapner told the newspaper that the shark attacked him from behind while he was getting ready to surf a wave.
"It all happened so fast, but I turned around and saw one of my legs was in his mouth," he said. "It was immense.
The surfer said the shark bit his legs for about a second, but then could kick him and let go. The animal then turned around and left.
Wapner said he asked his friends on the beach for help. He swam to shore and one of his friends took him to the hospital, where he was sewn 50 stitches and discharged.
"I'm happy to be alive," he said. "I'm still in shock. I got off really lucky." Nick said
