As the wave pool solution continues to elude the general public, innovations are being made to standing waves which are already in use around the globe. While not as dynamic as pools, with train cars running down the middle of them, pushing water over artificial reefs, standing waves in places like Munich, Boise and Bend allow for a low-cost solution to the search for inland rides.
And then there’s this: the UNIT Surf Pool. It’s sort of modeled after the Munich wave (and other standing, in-river features) and can be placed in any body of water deep enough–like a lake or deep part of a river in winter. The wave is powerful and looks really, really fun. All of the water is returned to the body of water that’s being utilized, too. UNIT Parktech, which is developing the device, is based out of Germany.
