On October 28th, 2013, Maya Gabeira was towed into a wave at Nazaré. Half way down the face, she hit a wave in the wave, bounced once, broke her leg, then drowned. Her tow partner, Carlos Burle, saved her life. The entire thing was captured on film, and the video quickly made its rounds.
It seemed as though everyone had an opinion. Maya, though, isn’t one to care about opinions. She simply put her head down and concentrated on her recovery, then paddled out again as soon as she felt up to it. Now she’s back at the spot where she nearly died, and it’s just as impressive as always.
