Many have heard about the Galapagos Islands and its incredible diverse wildlife. But I’d bet you’ve never considered the Galapagos Islands as your next surf destination.
There are just a few surfers here (mostly from Latin America) besides the locals, that have been enjoying the surf in this magical place. Empty, warm water lineups that look like they came out of a dream. The crowd here consists mostly of some really nice locals, iguanas, sea turtles and sea lions.
The Galapagos Islands have waves year round. The best months for surfing are December through February with most of the biggest and best breaks working with north swells. Those waves during a big north will reach double overhead.
The Island of San Cristobal is the most known for its surf tourism. During those winter months filled with north swells you will see plenty of surfers from all over; many from Brazil and a couple here and there from Peru, the United States, Uruguay, Argentina and Australia.
Some of the waves here aren’t very accessible. It will take a boat ride, a long walk, a hike, entering the naval base or any number of methods to get to some of them. But that’s exactly what makes the surf session worth it.
This summer I had the opportunity to visit some of these islands. I surfed, photographed and lived with the locals of the islands of Santa Cruz, San Cristobal and Floreana.
I have to say, I have never experienced people so selfless, fun, intelligent, nice, warm and welcoming as the “Galapagueños” before – and I’ve enjoyed my fair share of travel.
Here is a little gallery of the images from my trip to the Galapagos Islands.
