John John Florence is the only surfer who can claim the 2016 World Surf League Championship Tour title at Supertubos, in Peniche.

Nevertheless, the world title race still includes no less than nine pro surfers - Florence, Gabriel Medina, Matt Wilkinson, Jordy Smith, Kolohe Andino, Julian Wilson, Filipe Toledo, Kelly Slater, and Adriano de Souza.
Can the Hawaiian win his maiden world title in a beach break? Mathematically, it is possible. Florence will need to triumph at the Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal or finish second. But there are more variables in the winning formula.
John John will raise the iconic cup in the following situations:
If Florence wins the event and Gabriel Medina finishes no higher than 9th;
If Florence finishes 2nd, Medina finishes no higher than 13th, Matt Wilkinson finishes no higher than 3rd, and Jordy Smith finishes no higher than 2nd;
The Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal is the penultimate event of the season. The last stage of the Championship Tour is Pipeline Masters and runs from December 8th-20th.
