Like Xerox, Scotch Tape and even Bubblewrap, GoPro is a brand name so ubiquitous we often use it to describe the product they’ve created (bet you didn’t know that about bubblewrap, huh?). Long story short, they have a pretty strong hold on the action camera market.
It’s been two years since the company has rolled out a brand new version of their mainstay, the Hero, and a year since the introduction of the Session. This week they’ve finally released the details on their latest and greatest edition of the Hero, along with rolling out their own drone, the Karma. Here are some notable specs on the upgraded model, the $399 Hero5 Black. Some are new features, some were featured with the Hero4 Black:
  • The GoPro Hero5 Black has a two-inch touchscreen display on back, whereas the Hero4 had none while the Hero4 Silver did have a touchscreen display.
  • Built in GPS
  • Like the previous model, it shoots 4K video at 30 frames per second and 1080p video at 120 fps, shooting 12 megapixel photos.
  • It has three microphones, automatically using whichever mic brings in the best audio.
  • Wind noise reduction audio recording.
  • It can operate hands free. Yes, hands free. The Hero5 Black can be operated by voice which might be the most useful upgrade…how often is it the moment you most want to capture is the exact moment you shouldn’t be fumbling around with a camera? We can now tell our cameras to start recording in seven different languages. English, French, Italian, German, Chinese, Spanish and Japanese.
  • It’s waterproof out of the box. No housing needed up to 33 ft.
  • The ability to auto upload photos and videos to the cloud.
  • Captures RAW photos and Wide Dynamic Range Video.
  • Built in image/video stabilization.
