Building shit is cool. It can be super frustrating, really, really time consuming, and because of that, it’s incredibly rewarding. Like the old saying goes, “Nothing that’s worthwhile is ever easy.”
I’m in the process of building a house. I’ve been working on it for a few years now, and I’m determined to do everything myself–all the plumbing, electrical, etcetera. It’s much harder than I thought it was going to be, and it’s been a source of more frustration for me than anything I’ve ever done… but it’s also the best thing I’ve ever done. I used to have a thing that I called scrap-wood Sundays, where I’d try and build something interesting from scraps (on Sunday, obviously). As a result, I have a lot of weird little tables and benches that I will never use. But it’s not really about USING them–it’s about the process.
The surfboard you see above probably falls in that category. Similar to an alaia, it measures in at 6’6 x 17.25 x 2. It’s not a performance surfboard by any means. The process and the result, though, are far more rewarding than most things in life.
