It was pretty refreshing to know there are still perfect waves out there that you can surf by yourself.” That’s how New Jersey’s Rob Kelly describes his latest trip – an exploratory surf mission to Panama armed with a photographer (Ricky Lesser) and Waterways Surf Adventures’ President Sean Murphy as his partner in crime.
In a world that seems to be shrinking by the minute thanks to everything from surf forecasting to Google Earth it’s hard to imagine taking a trip that includes warm water and good waves but no crowds as the trade off. “The whole vibe of the surfing on this trip felt more like being in Indonesia or something,” Kelly said. “Except here we didn’t see any other boats or any other surfers.”
Apparently Rob has better Karma than the rest of us.
“The highlight of the trip for me was a day we had at one of the outer islands. The swell wasn’t even supposed to really start showing until the end of the day, but when we rode out to the first spot in the morning it was already pumping. We surfed from sunrise to sunset, followed the tide to different spots and didn’t see another surfer all day.”
Yep. Rob Kelly is clearly in cahoots with the surf gods.
