Hell hath no fury like a scorned woman. Treat a lady poorly and she’ll return the favor with equal if not augmented ferocity, breaking your heart and maybe more. Treat the sea with disrespect and she’ll wash your sorry ass against the rocks.
A German tourist learned that the hard way when he found himself in the wrong place at the right time at Dunedin Beach in New Zealand.
As he attempted to make his way to shore during a high tide and a serious swell, the amateur surfer ended up being pushed repeatedly up against a concrete stairway and a gaggle of rocks. Exhausted, he nearly gave up all hope until local surfer Jeff Patton helped him to safety. But Patton wasn’t pleased with his heroics. In his mind, they shouldn’t have been necessary.
“Are you alright? You’re f***** lucky, man. You could have been dead,” he said, reports the NZ Herald.
The footage is a stark reminder of how cruel the ocean can be. If there was anytime that Turtle’s sage advice from North Shore – “when the wave breaks here, don’t be there” – should’ve been heeded, this was it.
“Oi, stay the f*** out of there when it’s like that,” Patton told the tourist.
“Yeah,” the amateur surfer said, breathless and frazzled.
