There’s something to be said for a good burger. They’re definitely not an everyday health staple, but a good, fresh burger can be one of the best ways to refuel on the road, especially after a long surf. However, when you have the time (and the kitchen space) meatless burgers can definitely earn a spot in their own right on the weekly menu. This burger recipe offers a tasty alternative to the traditional beef burger, and it’s incredibly easy to make. The simple flavors give it a bit of pizzazz, yet they’re simple enough to adapt to any type of toppings you could imagine. I imagine this one with a generous serving of avocado and some Tapatio…

8 Ingredients
-1 can (15.5 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
-1/2 cup cooked quinoa
-1/2 teaspoon cumin
-1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
-1/2 teaspoon paprika
-1/2 teaspoon sea salt
-1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
-1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for cooking

Directions
-Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
-In a medium sized bowl, combine all the ingredients together using hands and/or fork to mash beans and mix thoroughly. (Ideally, this should form a thick mixture that is easy to shape into burger patties.)
-Divide mixture into four equal balls, and try to make patty between 1/4- and 1/2-inch thick.
-In a medium sized (and oven-safe) saucepan over high eat, cook patties in 1/2 tablespoon olive oil for 1 minute on each side, or until lightly browned.
-Move the saucepan to the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Serve patties on whole-grain buns or over fresh greens with toppings.
