Sponging gets a pretty bad rap. Sure, they’re lying down. And sure, for many it’s an introduction to surfing. But for a very dedicated and hard-charging few, none of the bullshit that surfers think about them matters. Bodyboarders have famously pioneered some of the heaviest slabs on the planet, then quietly gone about the business of finding more when surfers show up and claim them as their own.
