Kelly Slater’s mind and Kelly Slater’s board bag
are two of the most interesting places in surfing, and naturally they
are intimately connected, one seeming to flow almost imperceptibly into
the other. In this interview courtesy of the WSL Kelly unzips both of
them and gives us a peak inside, chatting to old mate and regular in the
commentary booth Ross Williams. Topics include the finer aspects of
surfboard design, how the shape and size of his boards have changed over
the years (in the 90s he used to ride boards just 17 1/8″ wide), his
recent acquisition of Firewire Surfboards, sustainability and
environmentally friendly practices in the surf industry, and his own
various plans for the future.
