A little surprise! Last October, Xavier Fortinon, President of the Landes County Council and Xavier Gaudio, Mayor of Soorts-Hossegor officially declared that the Landes were candidates to host the surf events at the 2024 Olympic Games. "With the department, associated with the community of municipalities in Seignosse, Hossegor and Capbreton, we are presenting our official bid for the surfing events for the 2024 Games to take place here," Xavier Fortinon proudly declared. Xavier Gaudi added that the Landes "have a real expertise in events" and that "the municipalities are complementary".
A small innovation to this speech, the city of Biarritz has been added in order to create a common bid! The Department of Landes, the community of municipalities MACS, Hossegor, Capbreton, Seignosse and Biarritz are now one and share the same dream: to host the surfing events of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. There will therefore be no neighborhood war, as the municipalities have decided to unite to increase their chances.
This bid offers a very beautiful playground: more than 30 kilometres of beaches, 15 world-famous spots, all in a 100% natural environment backed by undeniable know-how in the organisation of major world events. The only French stage of the World Tour has been held there for more than 30 years between Hossegor, Seignosse and Capbreton and the last ISA World Championship organised in Europe was held in 2017 on the Grande "Plage de Biarritz".
Supported by the sporting, economic and institutional world of this large territory (Basque Country - South Landes) this joint bid marks a new era in the history of surfing.
This joint application is in addition to the existing list of Royan and Lacanau. Not to mention the artificial wave projects of Castets and Lacanau which, without having applied, could well win the bid...
