While plastic containers are creating an ecological disaster by breaking up in the oceans and there may be more plastic than fish in 2050, surfers have decided to act by promoting an ecological and proven packaging: glass.

We saw Justine Dupont and Maud Le Car pose with glass bottles. Basque surfer Aritz Aranburu also took part in the initiative on the occasion of World Ocean Day. They joined members of the Friends of Glass community from across Europe to sing Charles Trenet's iconic song "La Mer" in this video.

The goal of the #CheersToTheOcean campaign is to raise awareness about ocean pollution and the need to make more sustainable consumption choices in everyday life. Glass packaging meets these requirements: 100% recyclable and infinite, glass can thus be transformed into new jars and bottles!

This echoes the results of the recent Friends of Glass study.

72% of Europeans now say they are concerned about the impact of their behaviour on the oceans, starting with the products they buy and the packaging used. 73% consider glass to be the most ocean-friendly packaging. This survey also reveals that 86% of French people and 78% of Europeans have changed their behaviour and say they pay much more attention to the environmental impact of their daily lives and their consumption habits.

Almost 70% of French people also prefer glass when buying food and beverages.

Friends of Glass supports Surfrider Foundation Europe. This partnership will make it possible to preserve 300,000 m2 of beach but also to raise public awareness of the impact of marine waste.

"The protection of the oceans is now at the heart of our concerns. Due to its natural composition, glass is the most environmentally and ocean-friendly packaging. We are delighted to participate in the #CheersToTheOcean movement and hope that this action will be strongly followed to better protect the seas, oceans and marine animals", explains Jacques BORDAT, president of the Federation of Glass Industries.

ABOUT FRIENDS OF GLASS

Created by the EPGF (European Packaging Glass Federation) in 2008, Friends of Glass is a community of 220,000 people, in Europe and elsewhere, all concerned about their own environmental impact and committed to choosing glass for a better planet and a healthier life. With unmatched durability, Friends Of Glass believes that glass is the most environmentally friendly packaging to avoid marine waste.

ABOUT THE EPGF

The European Packaging Glass Federation (FEVE) is the association of European producers of packaging glass and industrial table glassware. Its 60 member companies, belonging to some twenty independent groups, produce more than 20 million tonnes of glass per year. The glass industry is a key economic partner in Europe and maintains 125,000 jobs throughout the supply chain.
