Two people have been officially charged with the brutal murder that occurred on the North Shore of Oahu. Stephen Brown, a 23-year-old who lives in Honolulu, and his 20-year-old girlfriend, Hailey Dandurand, were charged on Saturday night with Telma Boinville’s death, among a slew of other offenses.
The murder shocked the idyllic community. Boinville, a housecleaner and substitute teacher, was well-known by many, and the outpouring of grief has been enormous. According to early reports, Boinville was cleaning a house in preparation for renters when the murder occurred. The renters, who arrived for their 3 p.m. check-in, found her and called the police. Boinville’s 8-year-old daughter was also in the house and was tied up. A crowdfunding campaign has been set up to help her.
According to the Honolulu Star Advertiser, Stephen Brown’s bail has been set at $1 million, while Dandurand’s has been set at $500,000. Brown has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, kidnapping, and had two outstanding warrants. Dandurand was charged with first-degree burglary, kidnapping, and unauthorized possession of confidential personal information.
The couple was arrested in the parking lot of the Mililani Walmart on Thursday night, just hours after the murder occurred. The Star Advertiser reported that after the 8-year-old told officials that one of the attackers had green hair, the community was able to find a suspect through social media. “Like I said, it’s a small island and I put out a shout out on my Instagram for anyone that can find the suspect,” Brian Emery, the brother-in-law of the victim said. “Everyone sent me pictures based on Makana, who was tied up upstairs, she knew that the guy had green hair so it breaks it down to a small margin.”
Soon after officials put out a statement asking for people to be on the lookout for Boinville’s vehicle, mindful members in the area spotted it and alerted the authorities and an arrest was made. Once again, our sincerest condolences to the friends, family, and everyone affected by this senseless tragedy.
