Gabriel Medina is a magician on a surfboard. He routinely does things that no one else on earth could pull off, and because he’s in a jersey for much of the year, we get to see them happen. One of those things happened during his Teahupoo heat against Owen Wright. In the first heat of the quarterfinals at the 2017 Billabong Pro Tahiti, Medina pulled into what looked like a closeout. Hell, it was a closeout. Somehow, though, Medina made it out from well behind the foam ball, and he made it out with enough composure to hammer a few giant turns out. He didn’t need to wait long to find out what his score was–the judges dropped tens with no hesitation.
