In tragic news out of Western Australia, a 17-year-old girl was killed earlier today after she was attacked by a shark while surfing near the town of Esperance in the southern part of the region. She was with her family when the attack occurred. Her mother and two sisters were on the beach.
The unidentified victim was surfing with her father when she was attacked. She suffered serious damage to one of her legs. Paramedics treated her on the scene and she later died in the hospital, according to reports. Wylie Bay Beach, where the attack occurred, has been closed.
There were two fatal attacks in Western Australia last year and shark activity had been reported in the area recently. The girl and her father were apparently surfing a spot known as Kelp Beds, about three kilometers east of Wylie Bay. A surfer reportedly lost limbs from an attack at the same beach in 2014.
