Going to Cuba is like going back in time. The people are friendly, the cars are from a bygone era, and there’s not a Starbucks in sight. The downside? The Internet is extremely restricted, no surf or skate shops exist on the island, and there’s a sense that someone is quietly watching your every move. At least that’s the feeling I had as an American with a camera following around a group of “misfit” surfers and skaters.
With donated and second-hand gear, a small but loyal group of pioneers are keeping these sports alive against all odds. Many Cubans see this as a waste of time, but the stoke found in these waves and skate parks rival that of anywhere else. With their numbers growing and the political tides changing these misfits may be poised for a board-riders revolution.
