Pro surfer Kelly Slater joked 2015 was the Chinese year of the shark, and he may be on to something.
Over July, Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark at J Bay in South Africa during a contest which cleared the lineup for some time afterwards.
A few days after that, Kelly Slater went out near Cape Town and little did he know, he was surfing parallel to a great white breaching.
He released the footage on his Instagram yesterday, and it’s pretty astounding.

Slater admits he thought there were sharks around while he was surfing.
“I thought it felt a little #Sharky this day,” he wrote on Instagram. “I was gonna [sic] surf this spot alone but decided to wait for Twiggy and one other friend to paddle out with.”
Pro Surfer and native South African Grant “Twiggy” Baker surfed with Slater and narrated the clip. He said sharks are pretty common at the wave they were surfing.
“It’s what I like to call the sharkiest wave in the world,” he said.
Great white sharks launch out of the water as a hunting method. By coming from below, they surprise their prey and strike it, leaving it motionless.
Luckily, it didn’t breach closer to the 11-time world champ.
