US SURFING legend Kelly Slater snuck
into the Gold Coast’s top-end real estate over Christmas, splashing out
$2.15 million for a luxury Palm Beach apartment.
Property records show the 11-time world champion purchased the unit on December 17.He joins motorsport great Mick Doohan, a five-time 500cc MotoGP world champion, on an exclusive street known as the southern Coast’s millionaires’ row.
The building in which Slater has bought became the first high-rise development in the prestigious strip after a lengthy court battle with the Gold Coast City Council. It is home to seven whole-floor luxury units, all with porcelain tiles, floor-to-ceiling tinted glass and stackable sliding doors opening to balconies with ocean views.
Only one unit in the block remains for sale, listed for a whopping $2.28 million.
It was reported in 2013 that Slater was on the lookout for a beachfront home after missing out on a luxury Currumbin house the year before.
He had bought a beachside apartment at Tugun for $445,000 in 2005 but said he wanted a property with ocean views.
“I bought the apartment a few years ago because I’d just sold a property I had in Sydney and needed somewhere to put my stuff, and the developer gave me a good price,’’ Slater said in 2013.
“But it’s definitely not my dream house. I need a view. I want to be able to see the ocean.”
