Tourists see orcas attack shark
SHARK cage divers off the coast of Port Lincoln have witnessed one
of nature’s rarest battles, with a pod of orcas attacking and killing a
great white shark off the coast of Port Lincoln.
The 23 tourists were off the North Neptune Islands south of the
Eyre Peninsula city on Monday when the pod of six whales — including two
calves — turned the tables on one of the ocean’s most feared predators,
herding the shark to the surface and slamming it in front of the
stunned onlookers.
Orcas, also called killer whales, are the
largest members of the dolphin family, and can reach lengths of almost
10m and weigh up to 10 tonnes.
Adventure Bay Charters skipper Kym Shepperd said that he’d never seen anything like it in 20 years at sea.

Shepperd said the whales were behaving strangely off the bow of the
boat, close enough that the divers below the water could hear their
distinctive clicking sounds.

“Then they worked their way to the back of the boat, circling the shark and pushing it down under the water.
“They did that a couple of times, then on the third time everything went quiet and it was all over. It was absolutely epic.”
