Japan is hosting the 2020 Olympics, and surfing is included. Apparently, it’ll be at a place called Shidashita Beach, locally known as Shida, where the waves aren’t all that great. There is, however, a lot of factors that need to be taken into account other than plain ol’ wave quality. The place in the video above, for instance, wouldn’t work. But how fun does it look?
For most surfers, the Japanese surf scene isn’t exactly pinging loudly on the radar. The spot above, however, looks incredible. And while it’s not exactly a secret spot (where is anymore?), it’s not exactly well known, either. It’s a good bet, though, that in the next few years, surfing is going to blow up in Japan even more than it already has.
