You’ve heard the phrase. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. If ever there were a battle cry that represented society’s shift in consciousness toward more sustainable living, that’d likely be it. Humankind is far from giving back to the planet just as much as it takes, and the threats of global climate change loom, but there has been a noticeable disruption in the last several decades. A different state of mind.
Where we once saw trash, and one-use products that never saw the light of day after their originally intended use was exhausted, there is now an entire community of people that see discarded waste as an opportunity. Kieren Giffen is one such kid. When he saw a handful of cardboard boxes on his neighbors driveway, a lightbulb went off. He decided to use what would otherwise be thrown away (or perhaps thrown in the recycling bin) for a specific purpose – to build an alaia surfboard. This isn’t the first time a board’s been made from cardboard. But it’s still pretty rad. It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “one man’s trash…” You get it.
