There’s only one word for the London Surf / Film Festival: rad.
Surf films as they’re meant to be seen on the cinema screen with a crowd of hooting frothers in the audience. This year’s officially kicks off tomorrow (even though it kind of did last Thursday with the premiere of Let’s Be Frank) and the line up is stacked with good gravy over the next two weekends in the Big Smoke. There’s something for everyone across the four nights, here’s a few that caught our eye:
View From a Blue Moon
John John’s film was shot in 4K by the esteemed Brainfarm crew. He didn’t mean for it to be seen on a tiny phone screen. It will look incredible on the cinema screen. Showing Friday 23rd second session and comes with the bonus of The Persistence of Hope, a short filmed by Sharpy and Tim Nunn with one of the maddest sessions they’ve witnessed in British waters. If you have the urge to meet two dishevelled surf photogs they’ll both be in attendance.
Sorria
Brazil’s answer to the Kai Neville/Joe G level films featuring the high performance surfing of that land’s finest like Yago and Filipe. Showing Session 2 tomorrow (Thursday 22).
The Zone
Finless frolics from auteur Jack Coleman promises a groovy look around the world with some of surfings most interesting characters from Hynd to Ozzie via Machado and Knost.
Chasing Zero
LS /FF alumni slash legend Chris McClean teams up with CJ Mirra for a performance unlike any other. Synthesisers, guitars, vocals and live processing will be soundtracking some of the most dark and beautiful surf footage which McClean will be projecting and manipulating live to create this immersive and interactive performance, not to be missed. Possibly the highlight of this year’s event happens Sat Oct 1, session 1.
Forbidden Trim
A very special 35 mm screening presented by the filmmaker, Forbidden Trim is one of the year’s most hotly anticipated movies – for good reason. Here’s the scenario: using a group of surfers for cover, a crack commando is sent deep into the jungle on a clandestine mission to eliminate the global crime syndicate, the Caldera Network. In other words it sounds bonkers. Which we like in a surf film.
It’s hard to pick just five as every session is packed with goodness. Tickets and more info on the link below. And if you’re coming Friday come say ‘hi!’ Sharpy is the speccy bald one and Nunn is the Daniel Bedingfield lookalike. They’ll probably be found near the bar…
